THE EDITORIAL METHOD
Useful context.
Visible limits.
Agent Fieldguide is a small, hand-reviewed directory. It helps you decide what to inspect next; it does not certify a tool for your environment.
Start with original sources.
We consult publisher documentation, project repositories, the official MCP Registry, and the Agent Skills format specification. Each note links back to its original guide. A registry listing establishes discoverability, not safety or endorsement.
Write the summary ourselves.
We record the job, setup path, stated compatibility, publisher, and a practical caution. The 61 entries were rechecked against publisher sources on 12 October 2026. Setup, eligibility, and license notes were updated where the documentation changed. We do not mirror third-party skill bodies or claim to have tested their behavior.
Dates are a snapshot.
Publishers can change setup, permissions, and product availability after our check. Each entry has a maintenance signal and source date, so you can inspect the current upstream state before installation. OpenAI marks its older skills repository deprecated; those notes describe historical examples and point readers to its current plugin guidance through the publisher README. Updates are reviewed before they appear here.
Permissions are part of the choice.
MCP servers may read or change files, accounts, payments, and other data. Review the requested scope and test in a safe environment where possible. A skill's instructions and bundled scripts deserve the same scrutiny before you run them.
Read popularity in scope.
We record dated GitHub repository stars, forks, and notification subscribers for ten sources; rounded skills.sh installs for 35 individual Agent Skills; and npm package downloads for ten verified MCP packages. The full map keeps repository, skill-install, and npm-download views separate. Anthropic Skills and MCP Reference are collection repositories, so their GitHub totals belong to the whole collection. Only tools with their own recorded count enter an individual heatmap; the rest remain in the directory. Skills.sh figures remain a rounded September snapshot, not independently reproduced in the October review. GitHub counters were refreshed on 9 October; npm fixed-window counts were rechecked that day. Sentry now belongs to the broader toolkit collection. npm downloads cover one stated 30-day window and are not a unique-user or quality measure. Small measured tiles have a disclosed visual floor. Agent Fieldguide is part of the Cheaper Inference portfolio. The directory is useful on its own; a small link to Cheaper appears where model economics is relevant. Placement in this directory is editorial, unpaid, and not a product endorsement.
